Canada Cleared of US Allegations of Manipulating Bobsleigh Qualifying Event

The Canadian skeleton team were cleared of accusations that they rigged a selection race for the Winter Olympics, which allegedly denied rival athletes a spot to qualify.

Central Claim and Official Inquiry

US skeleton veteran Katie Uhlaender accused the Canadian squad of withdrawing four of its six entered athletes from a recent event in New York. She claimed this reduced the field, making a lower points pool available. Although she took first place, Uhlaender did not secure her berth for the 2026 Olympics.

“Existing federation regulations allow member nations to pull competitors from competition at any time,” stated the International Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation (IBSF).

After reviewing the matter, the IBSF announced it would not impose sanctions, dismissing the complaints as there was no breach of its code.

Canada's Explanation

Reacting to the claims, the Canadian federation stood by the withdrawals, citing athlete welfare and the need for recovery. The organization asserted that some athletes had already raced multiple times that week and the move was “correct, transparent and in keeping with both athlete welfare and the integrity of the sport.”

Coaches from the US, Denmark, Israel, and Malta had voiced “serious concerns” about the qualification process.

The Athlete's Future

The 41-year-old athlete, the Milan-Cortina Games are planned to be her final Games. Her path to qualification remains, the probable US team spots are expected to go to Kelly Curtis and Mystique Ro. Uhlaender is a former world champion whose best Games result was fourth place in 2014.

A Contentious Sporting Climate

The controversy comes during a time of increased rivalry in athletic competitions involving the two North American nations. Recent political rhetoric and trade disputes have fueled a intense competitive atmosphere. Notable recent events include the 4 Nations Face-off and a seven-game baseball championship between teams from the two countries.
