Miami Heat & Portland Trail Blazers Secure First Victories After Player Detentions

NBA game action

Miami scored 86 first-half points versus the Memphis Grizzlies

The Heat claimed a crushing 146 to 114 win against the Memphis Grizzlies in their first NBA match since player Rozier was detained for alleged illegal sports betting.

Trail Blazers head coach Billups was additionally arrested as part of a sweeping federal investigation into illegal gambling. The two individuals contest the claims.

But, the Miami team were focused as they recorded 86 first-half scores to lead Memphis by 39 at halftime, the largest halftime lead in the franchise's 37-year history.

Adebayo led the way with twenty-four scores and afterwards stated Terry had the support of the team.

"We support him. Complete backing," Adebayo stated. "You support him through and through. He's like family ultimately."

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra added: "Terry is a person who is important to all of us. He has made a beneficial influence on our locker room.

"Our thoughts are with him and our care for him as he faces this."

The Trail Blazers also secured their first game since the detentions, with Brazilian Tiago Splitter taking over as interim coach in Chauncey's absence and leading the squad to a decisive 139-119 win against the Warriors.

"We all had positive times with Billups and how he coached," Tiago remarked. "We're thinking of him and his loved ones but we have a job to do."

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver 'Upset' by Arrests

Addressing the arrests for the first time, NBA commissioner Adam Silver stated he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the recent days.

"There's nothing more important to the league and supporters than the fairness of the competition," he told Amazon Prime. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was disturbing."

Silver also said an NBA investigation into Rozier's actions in March 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a game he participated for the Charlotte Hornets against the Pelicans, found nothing untoward.

"We were informed by the regulators and the betting companies," he continued.

"We investigated the matter and were open about it. And while there was that aberrational betting, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.

"Federal authorities has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can do all kinds of things that the league office is unable to.

"Therefore, we've been working with them from that point. And, of course, what they announced yesterday was an indictment.

"Moreover 30 months later, he has not been found guilty of anything, in justice to Rozier.

"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been suspended, and so it is a compromise here between upholding rights and investigating."
